Starting the year at the Mayagüez Youth Library is always special, but this January reminded us very clearly why this space exists : to unite education, culture and community.
During the first weeks of the year, we welcome families, children, volunteers, and collaborators who make the library a vibrant place, full of learning and meaningful encounters. Here, reading doesn't happen in isolation, but rather accompanied by experiences that connect generations and strengthen our identity.
3 Kings' Promise: stories that are sung and inherited
One of the most significant moments of the month was our Three Kings Day celebration, an activity that filled the library with music, stories and cultural pride.
Together we celebrate one of Puerto Rico's most beloved traditions, integrating:
Readings and stories about the Three Wise Men
Music and live performances
Conversations about the cultural significance of the Kings' Promise
Children and adults shared the same space, learning and actively participating. This experience reminded us that traditions also educate , and that passing them on is a powerful form of learning.
Celebrating the Kings' Promise was not only about honoring the past, but also about sowing knowledge and a sense of belonging for future generations.
Much more than just one day: January at the library
In addition to this special activity, during the month of January the library continued to offer:
Daily spaces for reading and exploration for children and families
Community visits and use of our study areas
Ongoing support for students, parents, and educators
Preparations for upcoming workshops and educational activities
Every day, the library remains a safe and welcoming place to learn, imagine, and grow together.
We invite you to visit us
If you haven't had the chance to visit us recently, we invite you to come and experience the library in person . Wandering through our spaces, exploring our collections, and sharing a moment here is an essential part of our community mission.
Every visit counts. Every person who walks through our doors reaffirms the importance of this space for western Puerto Rico.
